President Donald Trump assailed Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) for his inability to match absentee ballot signatures to the outer envelopes due to voter privacy.

Even in the unlikely event that an audit was granted, it would be all but impossible to trace and match signatures, as the ballots are separated from their envelopes during the tabulating process, for voter privacy reasons.

“Why won’t Governor [Kemp], the hapless Governor of Georgia, use his emergency powers, which can be easily done, to overrule his obstinate Secretary of State, and do a match of signatures on envelopes. It will be a ‘goldmine’ of fraud, and we will easily WIN the state,” Trump claimed without citing any evidence.

He added: “Also, quickly check the number of envelopes versus the number of ballots. You may just find that there are many more ballots than there are envelopes. So simple, and so easy to do. Georgia Republicans are angry, all Republicans are angry. Get it done!”

Fact checks by both Snopes and the Associated Press found Trump’s claims about signature matching holding enough weight to flip the state red again to be false.

Additionally, voters’ signatures were already checked twice during the absentee voting process — first when the voter requested a ballot and second when the ballot was returned.

Trump’s criticism of Kemp comes the day after he told Fox News on air that he regrets having endorsed him during the gubernatorial election.

“The governor’s done nothing, he’s done absolutely nothing. I’m ashamed I endorsed him,” Trump said.
