President Donald Trump said that he did not particularly believe Navy reports of UFO sightings.
Speaking with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos last week, Trump scoffed when the news commentator mentioned that the U.S. Navy had been reporting an increased number of unidentified flying objects. “I want them to think whatever they think,” Trump said of the Navy pilots. “I did have one very brief meeting on it. But people are saying they’re seeing UFOs. Do I believe it? Not particularly.” When asked if he was going to act on the reports, the president replied, “We’ll see.”
The Navy had drafted new guidelines for how to report encounters with UFOs as pilots began describing an increased number of sophisticated vessels during their flights. Some pilots apparently saw vehicles flying at supersonic speed over 30,000 feet with no exhaust fumes, reported the New York Times. The Pentagon has been tracking UFO sightings for over 10 years, ever since the passage of the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program. The program has operated quietly, with little public coverage, even though it is not classified.
