At his rally in Carson City, Nevada on Saturday, President Donald Trump claimed that if his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, were elected, his coronavirus response would lead to a strict national lockdown. He claimed voters for Biden would surrender their “future to the virus.”
“He’ll listen to the scientists,” Trump said. “If I listened totally to the scientists, we would right now have a country that would be in a massive depression instead we’re like a rocket ship. Take a look at the numbers.”
Trump used Democratic governors as an example of what might happen if Biden were elected, criticizing them for “keeping their states closed.”
Johns Hopkins University, which has been tracking the infection and death rates for the coronavirus since January, has reported that there have been over 8.1 million cases and 219,000 deaths in the United States.

Biden campaign spokesperson Andrew Bates fired back at the President’s remarks via Twitter Saturday night.
“Trump crashed the economy he inherited from the Obama-Biden Administration by lying about and attacking the science, and layoffs are rising. Meanwhile, Joe Biden would create millions more jobs than Trump,” said Bates. While Bates argued that Trump’s statements were “tellingly out of touch and the polar opposite of reality,” he did not include any data about Biden’s plans for creating “millions” of jobs as president, either.
During his rally, Trump also told the audience that if Biden were elected, “the Christmas season will be canceled.” During his campaign, Trump has attempted to appeal to Christian voters by repeatedly bringing up the religious holiday, and explaining that a vote for Biden might as well be a “war on Christmas.”
