Former President Donald Trump once praised Adolf Hitler in a conversation with then-Chief of Staff Gen. John Kelly, a new book says.

The conversation happened in Europe in 2018 when the Trump administration was visiting to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I.

“Well, Hitler did a lot of good things,” Trump told Kelly, according to the new book, Frankly, We Did Win This Election, by Michael Bender, a White House reporter for the Wall Street Journal.

Bender further wrote that the conversation happened as Kelly was giving the former president a brief history lesson about each European country during the conflict.

“Kelly pushed back again,” Bender wrote, “and argued that the German people would have been better off poor than subjected to the Nazi genocide.”

Trump immediately denied this claim and called it “fake news.”

“This is totally false. President Trump never said this,” Trump spokesperson Liz Harrington said in a statement. “It is made-up fake news, probably by a general who was incompetent and was fired.”

The book, Frankly, We Did Win This Election, is set to be released next Tuesday.
