Trump Considering Blocking $250 Million In Military Assistance To Ukraine In Victory For Russia
President Donald Trump is considering blocking $250 million in military assistance to Ukraine.
Lawmakers agreed on providing Ukraine with $250 million in military assistance for 2019. The funds included money for weapons, training, equipment and intelligence support.
Trump is scheduled to meet with the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky next week. The two will discuss the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.
Blocking this funding would strengthen U.S. relations with Russia and support Trump’s invitation to Russia to re-join the G8.
Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are outraged. Both parties have both pushed for increased Ukrainian military funding to counter the Russian military adventurism in eastern Europe.
While the national security team reviews the funding, Ukraine cannot spend the money. The money expire on Sep. 30. Defense policy legislation created an account in 2015 to help Ukraine battle pro-Russian separatists in Crimea after Moscow annexed the region.
