Former President Donald Trump slammed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) and his wife after McConnell acknowledged the fight Republicans are facing to take control of the Senate in November.

“Why do Republicans Senators allow a broken down hack politician, Mitch McConnell, to openly disparage hard working Republican candidates for the United States Senate,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Saturday.

“This is such an affront to honor and to leadership. He should spend more time (and money!) helping them get elected, and less time helping his crazy wife and family get rich on China!” he continued, referring to McConnell’s wife and Trump’s former Transportation secretary Elaine Chao.

Chao’s father, James S. C. Chao, is the founder of Foremost Group, a shipping company based in New York City. Chao, however, does not have official business ties to the company, though some speculated that she used her role as Transportation secretary to informally used her position to help Foremost Group. The Trump Justice Department declined to open an ethics probe after she resigned following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Trump’s comment responded to McConnell’s view of the upcoming November elections.

The Minority Leader told the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, “I think there’s probably a greater likelihood the House flips than the Senate. Senate races are just different — they’re statewide, candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome.”

Multiple Trump-endorsed Senate candidates are trialing in the polls, including Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, Herschel Walker in Georgia and Blake Masters in Arizona.
