Trump Administration Won’t Allow LGBT Pride Rainbow Flags To Be Flown At U.S Embassies During Gay Pride Month

According to numerous U.S diplomats, President Donald Trump’s administration has denied multiple requests to fly the pride flag on embassy flag poles in honor of LGBT Pride Month.

During former President Barack Obama‘s administration, all U.S embassies around the world were aloud to fly the rainbow pride flag on embassy flag poles for June’s Gay Pride Month.

The refusal by Washington to allow embassies to fly the rainbow flags comes just a week after the president tweeted about the launch of a global campaign to “decriminalize homosexuality” and tweeted a call for solidarity with LGBT people facing adversity around the world.

“Remember last week when President Donald Trump was pretending to celebrate Pride Month?” tweeted the LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD in what seemed to be a response to the Trump administration’s decision.

Israel, Germany, Brazil and Latvia are some of the countries whose U.S embassies have had their requests denied to fly the pride flag on the official embassy flag pole. No embassies have had their requests approved as of yet.

Embassies are allowed to use the flag in other places, such as walls inside and outside of the embassy. The U.S embassy in Seoul, South Korea, has a huge rainbow flag hanging on the side of the building.

“The pride flag will be on as many places as it can at the Embassy,” said a spokesperson for the U.S embassy in Berlin whose request to fly the pride flag was also denied. The U.S. Embassy in Germany’s denied request was surprising to some since the openly gay U.S. Ambassador Richard Grenell is leading the efforts to decriminalize homosexuality in over 70 countries, efforts Trump supports.

For the first time, New York will be hosting WorldPride throughout the month of June, the largest Pride celebration in the world
