Theresa May announced Friday that she will stepping down as prime minister of United Kingdom on June 7. She delivered a public and emotional speech to the press, confirming the news.
During the speech, May announced, “it is and always remains a matter of deep regret to me that I was not able to deliver Brexit. To succeed, he or she [the next Prime Minister] will have to find a consensus in Parliament that I could not,” May said.

May recalled all the successes that have occurred during her years in office, which includes “protecting the environment and attacking climate change.” She noted that her government increased funding for mental health.

Towards the end of her speech, May said, “I will shortly leave the job that has been the honor of my life to hold.” Moments after her last words were spoken, she teared up before leaving the podium. According to her speechwriter, Chris Wilkins, the speech had “a much more personal and emotional section.”
May will continue as prime minister as the search for a new leader of the Conservative Party takes place.
