Texas Senator Ted Cruz Warns: Democrats Want To Turn Texas Into A ‘Tofu, Silicon, Dyed-Hair’ California

On Saturday, Republican Senator Ted Cruz warned his supporters at a campaign rally in Texas that Democrats want to turn Texas into a liberal state like California, “right down to tofu and silicon and dyed hair.”

“We are seeing tens of millions of dollars flooding into the state of Texas from liberals all over the country who desperately want to turn the state of Texas blue,” Cruz said. “They want us to be just like California, right down to tofu and silicon and dyed hair.”

He told the crowd in Katy, Texas, that “we’ve got a real fight on our hands” in his tight race against Democrat candidate Beto O’Rourke. With his comments, Cruz tried to stir up resentment over the fundraising totals for O’Rourke, who has been beating Cruz in campaign contributions.

During his speech, Cruz admitted that he married a “California vegetarian. She’s wonderful, but I brought her to the great state of Texas,” Cruz said.

SLIDESHOW: DONALD TRUMP’S 30 CRAZIEST TWEETS

Texas is a major manufacturer of soybeans. Its production valued at nearly $61 million in 2017 and soybeans are major in the U.S. Some of those soybeans make their way into soy foods like tofu.

Also, Texas ranked second in the country in tech jobs in 2016. Dell, Intel, and Texas Instruments are just a few huge companies that use silicon chips and hire Texans. And as for the hair dye, people on Twitter immediately pointed out that Texas women dye their hair just as much as Californians. The Huffington Post reported that his blond wife was a brunette in college, according to her yearbook.

In recent days, several Republicans have issued warnings about a potential Cruz defeat in November. The New York Times reported Saturday that Mick Mulvaney, President Donald Trump‘s budget director, told a group of Republican party officials that a Cruz loss was a “possibility” because he was not a “likable” candidate.

Rick Tyler, who worked as Cruz’s communications director on his 2016 presidential run, said Sunday that he also believes it is “possible” that Cruz could lose, despite Texas being a deep red state.

“It’s possible,” Tyler said on MSNBC. “Beto O’Rourke has consistently out-fundraised him two-to-one, and he doesn’t take PAC money.”
