Texas Gov. Greg Abbott‘s (R) arrival at the Robb Elementary School shooting memorial in Uvalde, Texas, drew boos from the crowd on Sunday.

Shouts of “We need change, governor!” and “Shame on you, Abbott!” from the crowd were captured on video.

Abbott has been at the forefront of loosening gun laws in Texas, such as allowing permitless carry in 2021. He has drawn strong criticism over his views since the shooting that left 19 children and two teachers dead. The shooter, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, had legally purchased the two guns and load of ammunition days after his birthday.

The governor had been scheduled to speak at the National Rifle Association convention in Houston on Friday, but instead sent in a video message and held a press conference in Uvalde. He has reiterated his focus on helping those struggling with mental health rather than gun reform.

“You can expect robust discussion and my hope is laws passed that I will sign addressing health care in this state,” Abbott said. “There are an array of health issues that relate to those who commit gun crimes.”

“Anyone who suggests we should focus on background checks instead of mental health, I suggest to you it is mistaken,” the governor added.

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden also attended the memorial.
