The Supreme Court announced on Tuesday that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been hospitalized for an inflammation of her gallbladder.
At 87, Ginsburg is the oldest member of the Supreme Court. She is also the longest serving Democratic appointee.
“Ginsburg underwent non-surgical treatment for acute cholecystitis, a benign gallbladder condition, this afternoon at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland,” said the court in a statement.
After Monday’s argument, the court said Ginsburg sought treatment. Doctors at Sibley Hospital in Washington said she had a gallstone that “migrated to her cystic duct, blocking it and causing an infection.”

The Justice is expected to spend “a day or two” in the hospital.
Ginsburg has had cancer multiple times. Last August, she underwent treatment for a tumor found on her pancreas. In 2018, she had surgery to remove nodules found on her lungs. She also survived colon cancer in 1999 and pancreatic cancer in 2009.
