House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said that House Republicans’ investigations into the business dealings of President Joe Biden and his family are “rising to the level of an impeachment inquiry.”

McCarthy appeared on Fox News for an interview with Sean Hannity. While this is the most that the speaker has said regarding possible GOP presidential impeachment efforts, he did not say whether the matter would go any further.

Without giving too much away, McCarthy explained the scope of Republicans’ investigations into Biden and his family, as they are looking into payments from foreign companies and reports from IRS whistleblowers who have accused the Justice Department of wrongfully settling with his son, Hunter Biden.

“If you’re sitting in our position today, we would know none of this if Republicans had not taken the majority,” said McCarthy. “We only followed where the information has taken us. But… this is rising to the level of impeachment inquiry which provides Congress the strongest power to get the rest of the knowledge and information needed.”

Amid the early stages of the 2024 election cycle, GOPs are attempting to distract from frontrunner Donald Trump’s legal woes. They are hoping to link Biden to a similar crime and exploit the Justice Department for weaponizing its powers against conservative officials.

Efforts to impeach Biden have divided the Republican-led House. While hardliners will stop at nothing to make sure that Biden is removed from office and Trump is elected for another term, many centrist Republicans believe that such attempts are frivolous and will only hurt the party in the long run.

McCarthy has not responded to questions seeking more information about the House probe.
