Senate Democrats Set To Vote On Scaled-Back Gun Control Bill Soon

Senate Democrats are preparing to move forward with the scaled-down gun control bill. The goal is to secure 50 votes from the Senate Democrats while convincing moderate Republicans in the upper House.

The slimmed-down proposal will curb the original plan to mandate universal background checks for purchasing firearms.

“I’m not interested in bringing a proposal to the Senate floor that can’t even get 50 [votes], and the quickest way to get 50 is to keep all the Democrats together,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut) told Politico.

Senate Republicans are likely to oppose the bill and filibuster if the bill even if it gets a majority vote. However, Democrats still think that achieving a unified 50-votes is worth the effort to show that they are unified on the issue.
