Even though Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) has decided to partially remove his lengthy blockade on over 400 senior military promotions, a significant number of these officers continue to face obstacles in transitioning to their next assignments due to his continued holds on a few of the top-ranking positions.
“I’m releasing everybody — I’ve still got a hold on, I think, 11 four-star generals. Everybody else is completely released from me,” he told reporters.
The decision was made one week following Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (R-New York)’s announcement that the Rules Committee took action on a resolution, enabling the Senate to expedite the processing of nominations.
The Pentagon released a memo in February 2023, granting service members and their family members permission to receive “travel allowances” to regions where abortion is both legally and easily accessible, in cases where they face limited access in their current location.

Since February, Tuberville has been obstructing military promotions to express his disapproval of the Pentagon’s abortion policy.
Tuberville clarified his motives for initiating the blockade at the start of 2023. He stated that the Secretary of Defense’s policy to facilitate abortions using public funds compelled him to carry out his own plan, which involved withholding all U.S. Senate considerations for Department of Defense civilian, flag and general officer appointments.
