Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) urged President Donald Trump to purchase Greenland in a New York Times opinion piece published this week.
After The Wall Street Journal revealed Trump’s interest in purchasing Greenland from Denmark, Cotton offered his support in an extensive op-ed.
The senator claimed he was one of the first to propose the idea to a Danish official several months ago. He even noted he was the first to propose the idea to Trump. However, the autonomous island is not for sale. Danish officials have completely dismissed the idea since it became public.
Greenland has abundant natural resources and unparalleled strategic trade and military potential. The U.S. is not the first country to express interest in Greenland. Russia and China have also shown a desire to acquire the island.

Cotton argued that Beijing is attempting to purchase an old military base and build airports on the island. He also stated that melting arctic ice threatens the ownership of valuable shipping routes. These new routes could easily fall under Chinese or Russian control.
Danish officials, however, are not open to the idea. The Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederickson even went as far as to call the idea “absurd.” “Thankfully, the time where you buy and sell other countries and populations is over,” she said in a statement.
Trump was upset by the comments and postponed his scheduled trip to the country.
In his op-ed, Cotton turned the Danish argument around. “It’s obviously the right decision for the United States, and anyone who can’t see that is blinded by Trump derangement,” he wrote in his opinion.
