Sen. Lindsey Graham Leaves Senate Floor During Impeachment Trial ; Others Sleep, Use Fidgeting Spinners

As opening arguments from House impeachment managers have stretched over long hours into the night, senators have become increasingly restless during the trial.

Despite impeachment trial rules that require them to sit silently at their desks when the proceeding is in session, senators have been taking breaks, telephone calls and even making cable television appearances. Many of those who stay on the floor have found means of entertaining themselves, like crosswords and fidget spinners.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) left the floor for about 30 minutes only to leave again 10 mins later. He missed the impeachment managers using his words against himself as they played a clip from the Clinton trial of him arguing that an impeachable offense does not need to be a crime.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) left the trial on Wednesday almost an hour early. A spokesman said she had not been feeling well.

Sen. Cory Booker (D-New Jersey) spent some time Thursday in the Democratic cloakroom with what appeared to be an iPhone in hand.

On Tuesday, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee) made an appearance on Fox News while the debate between House impeachment managers and the White House counsel was taking place.

Several other Senators remaining in their seats have found ways to entertain themselves as the trial plays out.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) practiced his artistic skills Thursday as he sketched the Capitol. The day before he spent his time working on a crossword puzzle.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) swiped occasionally on his Apple watch, despite the no electronics rule.

A handful of senators vigorously chewed gum, while others played with fidget spinners — a gracious gift given Thursday by Sen. Richard Burr (R-North Carolina) to all of his Republican colleagues.
