Sen. Chris Murphy Says A ‘Handful’ Of Senate Republicans Want To Vote To Remove Trump

Sen. Chris Murphy (D–Connecticut) said that he had spoken with a tiny group of Senate Republicans about voting to remove President Donald Trump from office during the Senate impeachment trial.

On December 5, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D – California) said that the house would move to impeach Trump.

When Murphy was asked, on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, if he had spoken with “a single GOP colleague in the Senate who’s even considering voting for impeachment,” Murphy answered affirmatively.

“Yes,” he said, while declining to name any colleagues.  “It’s a small list, on one hand,” Murphy said.

The senator pushed back against calls for an anonymous removal vote. “I don’t buy this secret ballot thing. If there was a secret ballot, there’d still be only a handful of them that would vote to impeach this guy,” he said.

In a trial, two-thirds of the Senate would have to vote to remove Trump from office.

Now, at least 20 Republican senators would have to agree to vote to remove Trump from office for the motion to pass.
