President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer and former mayor of New York, Rudi Guiliani, is pushing to be on the White House impeachment defense team.
A White House advisor told reporters that Giuliani has been “working Trump hard” to be one of the lawyers defending Trump in the upcoming Senate trial. Giuliani and the White House have yet to comment.
He’s previously shown interest in being a part of Trump’s legal team. He told reporters on New Year’s Eve that he would “love to try the case.” He also said he’d be willing to testify if subpoenaed.
Giuliani suggested In an interview with Fox News host Jeanine Pirro that he believed the Supreme Court could dismiss the case against Trump. “I would say if it’s unconstitutional, it’s null and void.”

CNN sources said they do not expect Giuliani to join Trump’s legal team because Trump has been advised against picking Giuliani. “The president is never going to have him in the Senate trial, starting with the problem that he’s a potential witness,” a source said.
Giuliani met with Ukranian officials to find incriminating information on Democratic candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden under Trump’s direction. U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland told the House of Representatives in the impeachment hearings that the president directed him and Giuliani to work together to pressure Ukraine to investigate the Bidens.
Giuliani was also mentioned in the July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky that triggered the impeachment hearings. According to transcripts released by the White House, Trump told Zelensky, “I will ask him to call you, along with the attorney general. Rudy very much knows what’s happening and he is a very capable guy.”
