Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, the personal lawyer to Donald Trump, has explained in a new interview why he will not be representing Trump at his upcoming impeachment trial.
Giuliani was present at the rally which led to Trump’s impeachment. “Because I gave an earlier speech, I am a witness and therefore unable to participate in court or in the Senate chamber,” Giuliani told ABC News.
Giuliani said that he would be working on the Trump legal team’s defense and it is unclear if he still is, but not as a presenting lawyer. The former mayor also explained that Trump will plead not guilty to inciting insurrection because the remarks Trump made about voter fraud are, Giuliani claims, true. State and federal review of the 2020 presidential election have found that there were no cases of widespread voter fraud in any of the 50 states.
After Giuliani’s interview, a Trump spokesperson announced that Butch Bowers, a South Carolina lawyer, would represent the former president his Senate trial.
