Rudy Giuliani & 3 Trump Lawyers Subpoenaed By Jan. 6 Select Committee

The Congressional Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol subpoenaed three lawyers who back up former President Donald Trump‘s effort to overturn the 2020 election results. Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell and Jenna Ellis have been called to produce documents and sit for depositions on February 8.

“The four individuals we’ve subpoenaed today advanced unsupported theories about election fraud, pushed efforts to overturn the election results, or were in direct contact with the former president about attempts to stop the counting of electoral votes,” committee chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi) wrote in a statement.

The committee also subpoenaed Trump political advisor Boris Epshteyn.

Former New York City major and pro-Trump lawyer Giuliani had his New York law license suspended last June after the state’s appeals court deemed comments he made about voter fraud influencing the 2020 election misleading. Giuliani’s lawyer, Robert Costello, called the subpoena “political theater.”

“I don’t think there’s anything here he can testify about,” Costello said in reference to Giuliani and Trump’s attorney-client and executive privilege.

Powell was another very public supporter of Trump. The subpoena is based on her spread of conspiracy theories in relation to voting machines.

Ellis has been subpoenaed to testify about the two memos she prepared on Jan. 6 to examine the constitutional authority former Vice President Mike Pence had to delay or reject the counting of electoral votes from certain states.

Epshteyn allegedly had a phone call with Trump that morning also discussing the different routes they could take to stop the certification of election results after Pence made it clear he would confirm Biden’s win.

“It is no surprise whatsoever that the illegitimate Jan. 6 unselect committee would attempt to subpoena attorneys as it continues its Stalinist witch hunt against President Trump and his supporters,” Epshteyn wrote on Twitter.
