WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 13: House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) (R) listens to House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) during a news conference following a caucus meeting at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center February 13, 2019 in Washington, DC. McCarthy said that he supports the framework of a bipartisan spending deal that would avert another partial federal government shutdown but is waiting to read the bill before deciding on whether he would vote for it. On Friday in Salt Lake City, the Republican National Committee voted to formally censure both Reps. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Illinois) for their part in investigating the January 6 Capitol riot.
The committee harshly criticized the two representatives for their criticism against former President Donald Trump. A resolution from the committee stated, “The conference must not be sabotaged by Representatives Liz Cheney Adam Kinzinger, who have demonstrated with actions and words, that they support Democrat efforts to destroy President Trump more than they support winning back a Republican majority in 2022.”
The resolution said that Cheney and Kinzinger are “participating in Democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse” in their roles on the House Committee investigating January 6. This comes as now the committee is sending out subpoenas on “alternate electors” who falsely claimed that Trump won their states.
The RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, who is Sen. Mitt Romney‘s niece, said in a statement that Cheney and Kinzinger “crossed the line.” David Bossie, an RNC member from Maryland and an architect of the RNC’s resolution, suggested that the committee could not ignore the actions of Cheney and Kinzinger.
