On Wednesday, Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said that humans would not exist if there “wasn’t incest and rape” while defending his bill to ban all abortions. King’s latest outrageous comment has led to new calls for his resignation from Democrats and many GOP leaders.
King told a local gathering of supporters, “What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled out anyone who was a product of rape or incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that?”
King was nearly defeated in his bright-red Iowa district in 2018 by political newcomer J.D. Scholten. Scholten recently announced that he would challenge King again in 2020.
Democrats reacted by saying that King’s statement was an attack on victims of sexual assault and derogatory toward women’s rights.

House Republicans also criticized their fellow GOP member. House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) said that King’s comments are “offensive, and underscore why we removed him from his committees.”
