In an op-ed for The New York Times titled “It Is Not Enough To Condemn Trump’s Racism,” Omar stated that “throughout history, demagogues have used state power to target minority communities and political enemies, often culminating in state violence.” She went on to say that Trump is one such demagogue who is using his power to make racist attacks toward people across the nation.

For more than a week, Trump has taken to Twitter to attack Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York), Ayanna Pressley (D-Massachusetts) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan). The four Democratic Congresswomen have come to be known as “The Squad.”

Trump was condemned in a House vote for his racist comments – telling the women to “go back” to their countries. Three of the women were born in the United States, and Omar is the only non-native citizen.

Trump later continued his attack on Omar at a North Carolina rally at which the crowd chanted “send her back.”

Omar wrote that the rally:

“It reminds us of the grave stakes of the coming presidential election: that this fight is not merely about policy ideas; it is a fight for the soul of our nation. The ideals at the heart of our founding — equal protection under the law, pluralism, religious liberty — are under attack, and it is up to all of us to defend them.”

Omar noted that Trump uses the nation’s divisions as a political weapon. Trump “used overtly racist rhetoric to strike fear and division in communities of color and religious minorities across the country.”
