Rep. George Santos Won’t Serve On House Committees While Investigations Proceed

Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) has announced that he asked House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California) to remove him from his assigned committees until he is “cleared” of the numerous allegations he is facing.

“It is important that I primarily focus on serving the constituents of New York’s Third Congressional District and providing federal-level representation without distraction,” Santos said.

He was assigned to serve on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, and the Small Business Committee.

This seems to be the first consequence he has faced since admitting he lied in his biography.

Santos insisted he is not planning on resigning.

House Republican leaders have not urged Santos to step down as they do not want to threaten their narrow 5-seat majority in the House.

Santos has been under a great deal of scrutiny since soon after he won the midterm election race in November. A New York Times investigation in December revealed secrets relating to his personal life, career, and the sources of his campaign funds. A local DA has opened an investigation into his alleged misconduct.
