In a press conference on Monday, the four minority Democratic congresswomen whom President Donald Trump attacked on Twitter earlier this week responded to his “blatantly racist” comments, asserting that his xenophobic tirade was just a distraction from his corrupt administration and inhumane policies.
The progressive lawmakers, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York), Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota), Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Massachusetts), and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan) used a joint press conference to continue their counterattack against the president. On Sunday the president said that the progressives, commonly referred to as “the squad,” should “go back” to where they came from to help fix the corrupt governments there instead of criticizing America, a ridiculous suggestion as three of the four congresswomen were born in America and all are American citizens.

“This is the agenda of white nationalists, whether it is happening in chat rooms or happening in national TV. And now it’s reached the White House garden,” Omar said of what she called Trump’s “blatantly racist attack.”

Ocasio-Cortez said, “I am not surprised” by the president’s actions, given the manner in which he has treated immigrants and the average American. She stated that Trump’s attacks on her and her colleagues were nothing but a “distraction.”
“This president operates in complete bad faith,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “He does not know how to defend his policies, so instead he attacks us personally. That’s what this is all about”
She added that she and her fellow lawmakers aren’t going anywhere. “We don’t leave the things we love,” Ocasio-Cortez said, and “we love all people in this country.”
The idea of impeachment surfaced again during the conference, with Omar accusing Trump of “colluding with a foreign government” in the 2016 elections. Tlaib echoed her comments, sounding the rallying cry of impeachment once again, a proposal which all four legislators have been staunch supports of.
Trump posted a series of tweets over the course of the press conference, writing, “IF YOU ARE NOT HAPPY HERE, YOU CAN LEAVE!,” in the first tweet. Where the lawmakers would leave to is unclear, as all are American citizens.
