President Trump Slams Robert Mueller, Accuses Special Counsel Of Liberal Bias In Tweet-Storm

Donald Trump has made no effort to hide his disdain of Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible collusion between his campaign and Russia. Over the weekend, the president took his rage to a whole other level.

Trump Tweets About Mueller News

On Saturday and Sunday, Trump slammed Mueller in a series of tweets about the probe, which continues to put his administration — which has seen a string of firings in recent weeks, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson — in a difficult position. Thus far, 13 Russian individuals and three organizations have been indicted.

The tweets are also noteworthy because before Sunday, Trump had only referenced Mueller by name on Twitter once, in a retweet.

The president claimed the special counsel has received backing from several prominent Democrats, including “crooked’ Hillary Clinton supporters, in running his probe into Russian interference. Trump decried the fact that no Republicans were included on Mueller’s side, and reiterated his belief that the entire investigation is simply a “witch hunt” designed to discredit him.

Mueller himself is a Republican, as is former FBI Director James Comey. The FBI’s deputy director, Andrew McCabe, was fired on Friday. Trump suggested Monday morning that McCabe did not make memos of their conversations in person that such documents, if they exist, are “fake.”

“The Mueller probe should never have been started in that there was no collusion and there was no crime,” Trump tweeted Saturday night. On Sunday morning, he asked, “Why does the Mueller team have 13 hardened Democrats, some big Crooked Hillary supporters, and Zero Republicans?”

This statement is false. Though some members of Mueller’s team have donated to Democrats in the past, not all of his team is made up of Democrats. Trump also blamed Clinton herself and the DNC for paying for a “Fake Dossier” intended to monitor his campaign.

Despite Trump’s tweets, one White House spokesman said the president did not as of today intend to fire Mueller.

“In response to media speculation and related questions being posed to the Administration,“ attorney Ty Cobb said in a statement, “the White House yet again confirms that the President is not considering or discussing the firing of the Special Counsel, Robert Mueller.”

Some prominent Republican elected officials, like Senators Chuck Grassley — the Senate Judiciary Committee’s chairman — and Lindsey Graham, have called a second special counsel to investigate the FBI.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) has also split from many members in his party by saying there is clear evidence that Russian attempted to undermine Clinton’s 2016 campaign and favored Trump’s campaign during the presidential election.

Graham warned what the possible consequences would be of Trump firing Mueller.

“If he tried to do that, that would be the beginning of the end of his presidency, because we’re a rule-of-law nation,” Graham (R-S.C.) told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday.

Using a point made in conservative media like Fox News, Trump claimed that Comey lied under oath during his testimony to Congress last June. This allegation has resurfaced partly because of reports that McCabe — who was fired for unauthorized disclosure to the media — may have done so with Comey’s knowledge or approval.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer claimed Trump is doing everything possible to ruin the special counsel’s investigation.

“The president is floating trial balloons about derailing the Mueller investigation,” the New York Democrat said in a statement. “Our Republican colleagues, particularly the leadership, have an obligation to our country to stand up now and make it clear that firing Mueller is a red line for our democracy that cannot be crossed.”

Four people tied to the Trump campaign have pled guilty to crimes as part of the Mueller probe, and Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort has been indicted. Three of the four have confessed to lying to investigators.

Mueller subpoenaed the Trump Organization for documents last week, and the president has said that he is willing to testify before the special counsel.
