Louis DeJoy wants to keep his position as the U.S. Postmaster General under the Biden Administration, despite his support for former President Donald Trump. During the Trump era, the postal service was struck with budget and service cuts, which has left countless Americans complaining about slow delivery on items such as medicine and credit card bills.
DeJoy himself has been linked to issues with mail-in voting during the recent presidential election, as many strategies implemented by the postmaster general disrupted the USPS’ normal operation. Nonetheless, DeJoy met with the Postal Board of Governors on Tuesday to unveil his new 10-year plan.
President Joe Biden is being pressured to take action to remove DeJoy due to mail delivery delays. The president himself does not have the power to remove the postmaster general – only the Postal Service Board of Governors can do so. Postal unions have called on Biden to fire the board and appoint new board members who would move to replace DeJoy.
Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-New Jersey) is among those advocating for such measures. He wrote in a letter to Biden, “Through the devastating arson of the Trump regime, the USPS Board of Governors sat silent. Their dereliction cannot now be forgotten.”

Despite the push from Democrats, White House officials have remained relatively silent on the issue. In response to a question from reporters, press secretary Jen Psaki stated, “Well, as I understand it, there are a number of openings right now on the governing board of the post office, or vacancies… that would, of course, work their way through a personnel process. I don’t think I have anything more for it, on this for you.”
The lack of action from the Biden administration may come as a surprise, seeing as Biden campaigned on the issue of saving the Postal Service.
A recent financial report by the USPS estimated that the agency lost $9.7 billion in 2021.
