Pete Buttigieg blasted the hypocrisy of evangelical supporters of Donald Trump in an interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd.
“It’s something that really frustrates me because the hypocrisy is unbelievable,” he said on Sunday’s episode of Meet the Press.
The Democratic mayor of South Bend, Indiana, said that Trump’s strong opposition to immigrants and the working class is against what the scripture teaches. Buttigieg, an Episcopalian, said that Trump’s policies are inconsistent with “anything I hear in scripture or in church, where it’s about lifting up the least among us and taking care of strangers.”
In a recent visit to the Southern border in Calexico, California, Trump announced that there has been a big wave of illegal crossings.

“We can’t take you anymore. We can’t take you. Our country is full,” he said, referring to immigrants.
Buttigieg, one of the youngest mayors of a U.S. city, also said that Trump’s personal life and conduct go against what the scripture teaches.
“I can’t believe someone who was caught writing hush money to an adult film actress is someone they should be lifting up,” he said.
Roughly seven-in-ten white evangelical Protestants say they approve Trump’s presidency, according to Pew Research Center. This number is slightly lower than Trump’s approval rating in his earlier days of the job — eight-in-ten evangelicals approved his performance. While evangelicals continue to show overwhelming support for him, other religious groups are more divided on the issue.
Buttigieg has formed an exploratory committee for the 2020 presidential run, but has not officially entered the race. He is expected to launch a campaign soon, making him one of the youngest candidates among the crowd of Democrats, along with 37-year-old Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.
