Nunes & McMorris Rodgers Caught On Tape Saying GOP May Impeach Rosenstein After Kavanaugh’s Confirmation

On a secretly recorded audio tape, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), House Intelligence Committee chairman, told to supporters at a Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) fundraiser event last week that the GOP may move to impeachment of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein after the Senate confirms Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

According to the audio that aired Wednesday on The Rachel Maddow Show, Nunes said, when asked about the impeachment plans, “it’s a bit complicated [because] we only have so many months left. Do you want them to drop everything and not confirm the Supreme Court justice, the new Supreme Court justice?”

“The Senate would have to drop everything they’re doing … and start with impeachment on Rosenstein. And then take the risk of not getting Kavanaugh confirmed,” Nunes continued. “So it’s not a matter that any of us like Rosenstein. It’s a matter of, it’s a matter of timing. Well, and you have to decide what you want right now because the Senate only has so much time.”

SLIDESHOW: DONALD TRUMP’S 30 CRAZIEST TWEETS

Nunes statements are interesting because the Republican House leadership publicly backed off the impeachment plans. House Speaker Paul Ryan said a day after the impeachment resolution was introduced, “Do I support impeachment of Rosenstein? No, I do not.”

A group of conservative House lawmakers have accused Rosenstein of trying to stymie congressional oversight of Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s investigation of alleged interference in the 2016 presidential campaign. Rosenstein appointed Mueller in May of 2017 to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 and other matters after President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.
