Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, who many considered a presidential hopeful, confirmed on Monday that she would not run and will back former President Donald Trump if he were to run.
When asked at a South Carolina State University news conference if she would support another presidential bid from Trump, Haley said, “Yes,” and that “if President Trump ran, and I would talk to him about it.”
“That’s something that we’ll have a conversation about at some point, if that decision is something that has to be made,” Haley said. Haley’s position as a GOP presidential nominee hopeful highlights the odd space she and other hopefuls are in – because the GOP is so deeply tied to Trump, even suggesting she might run against him could be the death of a campaign.
At a Republican National Committee event on Sunday, Haley gave further thoughts about Trump, who recently targeted Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky). “I think former President Trump’s always been opinionated,” Haley said. “Just because he left being president, that’s not going to stop. But I think what he also talked about were all the successes that he had in the administration. And I think that’s what Republicans are uniting on.”
