WASHINGTON, DC - AUGUST 24: Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley stands on stage in an empty Mellon Auditorium while addressing the Republican National Convention at the Mellon Auditorium on August 24, 2020 in Washington, DC. The novel coronavirus pandemic has forced the Republican Party to move away from an in-person convention to a televised format, similar to the Democratic Party's convention a week earlier. Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, who many considered a presidential hopeful, confirmed on Monday that she would not run and will back former President Donald Trump if he were to run.
When asked at a South Carolina State University news conference if she would support another presidential bid from Trump, Haley said, “Yes,” and that “if President Trump ran, and I would talk to him about it.”
“That’s something that we’ll have a conversation about at some point, if that decision is something that has to be made,” Haley said. Haley’s position as a GOP presidential nominee hopeful highlights the odd space she and other hopefuls are in – because the GOP is so deeply tied to Trump, even suggesting she might run against him could be the death of a campaign.
At a Republican National Committee event on Sunday, Haley gave further thoughts about Trump, who recently targeted Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky). “I think former President Trump’s always been opinionated,” Haley said. “Just because he left being president, that’s not going to stop. But I think what he also talked about were all the successes that he had in the administration. And I think that’s what Republicans are uniting on.”
