The Democrats managed to break some records as they swept through the House this year, as election data gathered by NBC News shows that the Democratic Party took the Lower Chamber with the widest margin of victory of any party in the nation’s history.
Democrats won a sizable 53.1 percent of the total 111 million ballots cast in this year’s midterm elections, as of results published by NBC News Monday. This gives them an 8,805,130 vote lead over the Republicans, who managed to secure only 45.2 percent of the electorate.
This victory tops the previous election record of an 8.7 million vote margin set in 1974 following former President Richard Nixon’s disgraced resignation during the Watergate scandal.
This margin is reflected in the fact that Democratic candidates succeeded in taking the majority in the House by flipping 39 previously Republican controlled seats.
