Nancy Pelosi & Rebel Democrats Agree To Term Limits On Party Leaders, Securing Votes To Make Pelosi Next Speaker

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has agreed to a deal that would place term limits on party leaders, something that would likely help her reclaim the House Speaker role next month.

Pelosi, should the deal pass, would then support a caucus rule that would place a three-term limit on the three highest ranking members of her party.

This would also be applied retroactively, meaning Pelosi, House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), and Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn (D-S.C.) would reach their term limits at 2020. However, anyone wishing to run for a forth term will require the support of two-thirds of the Democratic conference.

According to one of Pelosi’s aides, “There are various conversations going on about a path forward. Progress has been made and the conversations are constructive because all involved care about the institution of the House of Representatives.” The conference will have to approve of this new deal, but Pelosi has pledged to apply the term limits to herself regardless.

While five Democrats are expected to support the agreement – namely Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), Rep. Linda Sánchez (D-Calif.), Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.); Rep. Bill Foster (D-Ill.); and Rep. Filemon Vela (D-Tex.) – there is resistance to the idea from others, including members of the Black Caucus and even some of Pelosi’s deputies. “She’s not negotiating for me,” Hoyer claimed.
