Mitch McConnell Contradicts Trump’s Claim That He Said Phone Call With Ukrainian President Was ‘Innocent’

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) said Tuesday that he does not remember ever calling President Donald Trump‘s July 25 phone call with Ukraine “perfect.”

Trump, who has repeatedly described the conversation as “perfect,” said in early October that McConnell found no fault with the transcript.

“He read my phone call with the president of Ukraine. Mitch McConnell, he said, ‘That was the most innocent phone call that I’ve read.’ I mean, give me a break. Anybody that reads it says the same thing,” Trump said.

McConnell seemingly contradicted Trump’s statement, telling reporters at his weekly news conference, “We’ve not had any conversations on that subject,” when asked if he believed the President handled the Ukrainian situation perfectly.

He was then pressed about Trump’s claims that McConnell approved of the conversation.

“You have to ask him,” he said. “I don’t recall any conversations with the President about that phone call.”

McConnell had previously urged the White House to release a transcript of the July 25 call, in which Trump asks Ukraine for a “favor.”

The call is a central component of the Democrat’s impeachment inquiry into the President. Trump is currently being scrutinized for his dealings with Ukraine, and his alleged threat to withhold U.S. aid until they agreed to open a political probe.

In a tweet from Oct. 20, Trump writes that the entire impeachment inquiry is focused on “a perfect phone call I had with the Ukrainian President.”
