Before an interview on Fox and Friends, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) spoke to host Steve Doocy, seemingly unaware that he was being recorded. McCarthy slammed Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) saying that he’s “lost confidence” in her and that he’s confident she will be removed from her position as House conference chair in the near future.

“I think she’s got real problems,” McCarthy said on the hot mic. “I’ve had it with … I’ve had it with her. You know, I’ve lost confidence. … Well, someone just has to bring a motion, but I assume that will probably take place.”

In his actual interview, McCarthy was much less direct about Cheney saying, instead that he had heard colleagues in the House voice concern about Cheney, never mentioning his own opinion of the Wyoming representative.

Cheney spokesperson Jeremy Adler said in a statement soon after the McCarthy tape went public, “This is about whether the Republican Party is going to perpetuate lies about the 2020 election and attempt to whitewash what happened on Jan. 6. Liz will not do that. That is the issue.”
