First Lady Melania Trump faced angry protests on her visit to the Boston Medical Center (BMC) on Wednesday.
The protesters were employees of the hospital. Thirty percent of all patients in the hospital are immigrants, who cannot speak English. The protesters were demonstrating primarily against President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

Melania was traveling with the Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar to meet the staff and patients of the Boston Medical Center. Her visit had nothing to do with the president’s immigration policies. The trip was part of her pet project, “Be Best.”

According to White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham, the first lady came to see first hand some of the impressive programs that the hospital runs. “Her multi-pronged platform addressing the health and wellness of children visit focused on babies born with medical issues as a result of mothers who abused opioids while pregnant,” Grisham said.
These programs at BMC serve to care for mothers and children adversely affected by the opioid crisis.
The BMC protesters, on the other hand, showed solidarity for the hospital’s patients, particularly the immigrants targeted by Trump’s anti-immigrant policies.

Walsh wrote back to them saying she considered this visit an opportunity to share with the nation’s leaders the hospital’s cherished values of inclusion, dignity and respect for humanity.
In her speech, the first lady made no reference to the protests. She said she was there to talk about the opioid crisis, which was wreaking havoc on families with babies and young children.
The protesters carried signs saying, “We Care for All” and “Exceptional Care, No Exceptions.”
