McConnell Rejects Manchin’s Election Reform Compromise

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) will oppose Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-W.Va.) compromise election reform proposal.

McConnell said on Thursday: “I would make this observation about the revised version … all Republicans I think will oppose that as well if that were to be what surfaced on the floor.”

The For the People Act will require 60 votes to advance in the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) arranged for the vote to take place next week.

Manchin is opposed to the Act but has offered his own compromise bill. Manchin’s compromise includes tighter campaign finance requirements, making election day a public holiday and allowing for automatic voter registration through a state’s department of motor vehicles.

“I’ve been working across the aisle with all the Republicans trying to get people to understand that that’s the bedrock of our democracy, and accessible, fair and basically secured voting,” Manchin said.
