“Martin Luther King Would Be Proud of Trump” Says Steve Bannon

Sunday, former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon voiced his unequivocal support for President Donald Trump and his zero-tolerance immigration policy on ABC’s This Week.

“Donald Trump is accomplishing everything he committed to the American people on the campaign that I stepped in as CEO. I couldn’t be prouder of the guy,” Bannon said.

Bannon previously served as head of right-wing, Breitbart News as well as White House chief strategist under the Trump administration. He was forced to resign after the release of the book The Fire & The Fury and has not been in direct contact with the president since.

This has not stopped him from commenting on Trump’s policies. When discussing Trump’s zero-tolerance immigration policy, Bannon boldly states, “Martin Luther King … he would be proud of what Donald Trump has done for [the] black and Hispanic working class, okay?”

According to Bannon, the policy has helped minority communities by keeping out foreign competition that would otherwise depress wages in the unskilled labor market. “We have all-time low unemployment among blacks in this country, a 20-year low among Hispanics,” noted Bannon.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics statistic has often been labeled as misleading as it only includes data dating back to 1972 and does not include those not actively seeking work or those incarcerated. Many also point out that the unemployment rate was already falling at the same rate it had for the six years leading up to Trump’s election.

The immigration policy has also been labeled as immoral as it often results in the forced detention and separation of families. When asked to comment on this, Bannon responded, “The morality is the law.”

Bannon’s reference to MLK also comes as a surprise as Trump’s administration is actually associated with an overall increase in hate crimes against minorities within the last year, according to the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University at San Bernardino.

Bannon has never been one to shy away from voicing his views on anti-immigration. Just last March, the right-wing strategist spoke at a meeting of the far-right National Front in France, where told attendees, “Let them call you racists. Let them call you xenophobes. Let them call you nativists. Wear it as a badge of honor.”
