Fox News host Laura Ingraham compared the detention facilities where migrant children are taken by the thousands from their parents and held in cages to summer camps while attempting to trivialize concerns brought about by the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy.
“More kids are being separated from their parents and temporarily housed in what are essentially summer camps, or as The San Diego Union Tribune described them today, as basically looking like boarding schools,” Ingraham said Monday. “The American people are footing a really big bill for what is tantamount to a slow-rolling invasion of the United States.”
While the newspaper had said that the Casa San Diego facility classrooms, a play area and a medical clinic, upon closer inspection, the facility resembles a prison.

“It’s surrounded by fencing that is backed by privacy netting, and a sign at the gate warns visitors that it’s under video surveillance 24 hours per day. If someone opens the front door of the facility without first swiping a badge, an alarm blares through the hallway, warning of a potential escape,” the paper reported.

In an opinion written for The Washington Post, former First Lady Laura Bush said that the facilities were “eerily reminiscent of the internment camps for U.S. citizens and noncitizens of Japanese descent during World War II, now considered to have been one of the most shameful episodes of U.S. history.” She called the “zero-tolerance” policy cruel, immoral and heartbreaking.
Although Attorney General Jeff Sessions and other members of the Trump administration continue to try defending these actions, the overwhelming calls to halt separating families has resulted in the Homeland Security secretary drafting an order to end them, though it remains unclear if President Donald Trump will sign it.
