The U.S. recently expelled Russian diplomats in response to the country’s poisoning of a Russian spy in Britain, and Russia responded by announcing it would kick out American diplomats. Trump also authorized giving weapons to Ukraine to help fight off Russian-backed separatists.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders confirmed the phone call between Putin and Trump.

“As the President himself confirmed on March 20, hours after his last call with President Putin, the two had discussed a bilateral meeting in the ‘not-too-distant future’ at a number of potential venues, including the White House,” Sanders said. “We have nothing further to add at this time.”

Ushakov also noted that no concrete plans have been made to arrange a meeting between the two presidents.
