John McCain To Allies: “Americans Stand With You” Even If Donald Trump Doesn’t

Sen. John McCain took to Twitter to reassure United States allies that the feelings its president, Donald Trump, has do not match those of its citizens.

This comment was particularly aimed at the other Group of Seven (G-7) members following a tense summit in Quebec where Trump ended up calling Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “weak and dishonest” and refused to sign the G-7 communique.

Trudeau had said in an earlier news conference that he was “happy to announce that we have released a joint communique by all seven countries,” which indicates the United States was on board. Trump, however, called Trudeau’s statement “false,” said the U.S. would not endorse the agreement and said he will be looking into raising tariffs on automobiles.

In that same news conference, Trudeau vowed “retaliatory measures” on July 1 in response to the Trump administration’s decision to impose tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

At the summit Trump complained that allies were treating America “like a piggy bank,” and vowed to stand by tariffs. He then reportedly suggested instead that the countries drop all tariffs.
