Former Vice President Joe Biden defended his son Hunter’s work on the board of a Ukrainian gas company during the Democratic debate Tuesday night.

“My son did nothing wrong. I did nothing wrong,” said Biden. “I carried out the policy of the United States in rooting out corruption in Ukraine.”

President Donald Trump has criticized the father-son duo, claiming that Joe Biden used his political power as Vice President to help his son’s business interests. Both Bidens have vehemently denied this claim, and there is currently no evidence to suggest that Joe Biden’s actions in Ukraine helped Hunter Biden.

Biden then used his answer to segue into talking about the impeachment inquiry into Trump.

“What I think is important is we focus on why it’s so important to remove this man from office,” he said. “This president on three occasions, three occasions, has invited foreign governments and heads of government to get engaged in trying to alter our elections. The fact is that it is outrageous.”

The House is currently looking into Trump’s own interactions with Ukraine, and a phone call in which he allegedly pressured the Ukrainian government to open an investigation into the Bidens.

The morning before the debate, Hunter Biden appeared on Good Morning America to discuss his foreign business dealings. While he denied using his father’s position to protect the company he worked for, he did admit it was poor judgement to serve on a foreign board while his father was in office.

Hunter also promised to not work for any foreign companies if his father is elected president.

“I made a mistake, in retrospect, as it related to creating any perception that it was wrong, and so, therefore, I’m taking it off the table,” he said in the interview. “I’m making that commitment. We’ll see if anybody else makes that commitment, but that’s the commitment I’m making.”
