The top negotiator for Iran tweeted a photo of his country’s flag after an airstrike on a base housing U.S. troops in a not-so-subtle jab at President Donald Trump, who tweeted an American flag after ordering the assassination of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.
Saeed Jalili tweeted the photo Tuesday night, after the retaliatory attack on the military bases.
A week prior, Trump tweeted a flag without giving any context.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the strike was an act of “self-defense,” and Iran does not seek further escalation.

“Iran took & concluded proportionate measures in self-defense under Article 51 of UN Charter targeting base from which cowardly armed attack against our citizens & senior officials were launched,” he wrote in a tweet Tuesday night.
