House Democrats Threaten Jail Time For White House Officials Refusing To Comply With Subpoenas

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) has threatened jail time for White House officials who are declining to comply with Congressional committees’ efforts to conduct oversight of President Donald Trump‘s administration. Connolly said Friday that Congress “will use any and all power in our command” — including incarceration to force them to comply.

“Whether that’s a contempt citation, whether that’s going to court and getting that citation enforced, whether it’s fines, whether it’s possible incarceration. We will go to the max to enforce the constitutional role of the legislative branch of government,” he added.

White House adviser Stephen Miller, former security clearance official Carl Kline and John Gore, a deputy assistant attorney general in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, have all refused to testify as part of the investigation into the Trump Administration. The House wants to question Kline on security clearances issued to Jared Kushner and Gore on adding a citizenship question added to the U.S. Census.

Connolly called Miller out saying that the committee wanted to learn what he “has in his head” as he continues to push for strict immigration policies within the Trump Administration.

“We want to hear from him, what is your thinking, what is it you’ve been advising the president, and where is it you think you’re going to be taking us as a country with these kinds of policies and personnel changes?” Connolly said.

Trump says that the administration is “fighting all the subpoenas.” “These aren’t, like, impartial people. The Democrats are trying to win 2020,” he continued. “They’re not going to win with the people I see and they’re not going to win against me.”
