After his inflammatory remarks believed to have incited the storming of the Capitol building Wednesday, Senator Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) was publicly dropped by publisher Simon & Schuster who were scheduled to release the senator’s new book this June.

“This could not be more Orwellian,” Hawley said. Simon and Schuster, actually, is the largest publisher of George Orwell’s books, including 1984, which Hawley is likely referencing. “Simon & Schuster is canceling my contract because I was representing my constituents, leading a debate on the Senate floor on voter integrity, which they have now decided to redefine as sedition,” he said.

Hawley is pictured in an image circulated on social media raising his fist in support of the crowds who would hours later storm the Capitol building.

A fundraising email from Hawley to supporters during the lockdown in the Capitol building read, “Many career politicians in the DC establishment want me to stay quiet. I suppose you can assume nothing I do will matter. That it won’t matter if I object or not, so I should sit by and do nothing.”

Simon & Schuster quickly commented, “we did not come to this decision lightly. As a publisher it will always be our mission to amplify a variety of voices and viewpoints: At the same time we take seriously our larger public responsibility as citizens, and cannot support Senator Hawley after his role in what became a dangerous threat.”

Hawley has threatened litigation, but Simon & Schuster have publicly commented that they are confident they are well within their contractual obligations.
