Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) said that he believes the 2020 election was illegitimate and that he would not have certified it.
“Do I think there were problems in 2020? Yes, I do,” Vance told ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos, adding he would not have certified the results as former Vice President Mike Pence had done.
His comments suggest his desire to be Donald Trump’s running mate in the upcoming presidential race.
Vance previously expressed his distaste for Trump’s politics and persona, calling himself a “never-Trump guy,” but recent interviews reveal his newfound admiration for the ex-president.

He further expressed his support for Trump by downplaying sexual abuse and defamation allegations made against him by advice columnist E. Jean Carroll. Vance suggested that the reason verdicts are not coming out in Trump’s favor recently is that judges disagree with him politically and are carrying out an agenda against him. “The Supreme Court can make rulings, but they aren’t always right,” he said.
Vance recently published an op-ed, “The Republican Plot Against Donald Trump,” where he argues that even members of the GOP are part of an effort to silence Trump and have him removed from power.
Vance previously earned Trump’s endorsement in 2022 during the Ohio Senate primary race.
