House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-New York) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) proposed to erase former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment from House records. The suggestion has divided House Republicans, as some fear that it may hurt them in the upcoming election cycle.
It is unclear whether Stefanik and Greene have the votes to push their motion forward. While some GOP officials are on the fence, certain members such as Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Washington) and David Valadao (R-California), who voted to impeach Trump following the events of January 6, 2021, are likely to oppose the effort.
Discussions to remove the impeachment from House records comes amid a troubling legal time for Trump, who was indicted this month on 37 counts of willful retention of national defense information and conspiracy to obstruct justice. The former president was arrested and arraigned at the Miami federal courthouse, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges.
While Trump’s M.A.G.A. base has generally remained strong, he does seem to be slowly slipping in the polls. Republican voters and officials, as well as Trump’s fellow 2024 GOP presidential candidates, have questioned whether his recent actions are indications that he should not serve a second term.

Stefanik, however, has remained an avid supporter of Trump. Following Trump’s arraignment, she put out a statement that marked the day as a “dark” one for the country.
“America was founded on the principle of equal justice under the law. The American people see the glaring double standard: one set of rules if your last name is Biden or Clinton and another set of rules for everyone else. It’s never been more important that we unite behind President Trump’s historic campaign to win the White House, to restore the rule of law, and save our Republic,” wrote Stefanik.
Stefanik and Greene’s proposal came just days before the House Freedom Caucus’ vote to revoke Greene’s membership, a decision that has also not yet been announced.
