GOP Rep. Mary Miller Slammed For Criticizing Sikh Man Delivering Prayer In Congress, Confusing Him With A Muslim

A Republican congresswoman is facing bipartisan backlash after calling a Sikh’s deliverance of a morning prayer “deeply troubling.”.

Rep. Mary Miller (R-Illinois) started a firestorm on X in a now-deleted post.

“It’s deeply troubling that a Muslim was allowed to lead prayer in the House of Representatives this morning,” she wrote. “This should have never been allowed to happen.”

Miller is referring to Giani Singh, a member of the Gurudwara South Jersey Sikh Society in Vineland, New Jersey, as the “Muslim” who served as guest chaplain on Friday morning.

“America was founded as a Christian nation, and I believe our government should reflect that truth, not drift further from it,” she added.

The House has historically invited people of various religions to serve as guest chaplains.

“People should think before they talk or type,” said one House Republican, in an anonymous interview with Axios.

Rep. Nick LaLota (R-New York) said in a X post, “A Sikh prayer on the House floor—followed by a Christian prayer one week and a Jewish prayer the next—doesn’t violate the Constitution, offend my Catholic faith, or throttle my support for Israel. Live and let live.”

Miller has faced controversy before. In 2022, she gained public attention for accidentally confusing “right of life” with “white life” in a victory speech after the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
