California Republican Congressman Kevin McCarthy, the house majority leader, slammed Google on Thursday after the company associated the state’s GOP with “Nazism.”
A Google search for “California Republican Party” reportedly listed Nazism as a result for ideologies linked to the party along with “market liberalism” and “conservatism.”
“Dear @Google, This is a disgrace #StopTheBias,” McCarthy wrote on Twitter.

Political views associated with the Republican Party have since been removed from sidebar on the search engine’s results page for that phrase or for other similar searches.
Google often pulls content from Wikipedia for its top search results. Nevertheless, the GOP’s Wikipedia page does not include any direct reference to Nazism.
The Silicon Valley tech company said in a statement that an outside source added the controversial term to the sidebar.
“This was not the result of any manual change by anyone at Google. We don’t bias our search results toward any political party. Sometimes people vandalize public information sources, like Wikipedia, which can impact the information that appears in search,” a Google spokesperson said.
“We have systems in place that catch vandalism before it impacts search results, but occasionally errors get through, and that’s what happened here,” the statement added.
McCarthy had previously criticized technology companies for being biased against Republicans.
California is set to hold primary elections next week. Some districts in the state count several Democratic candidates, thus hinting at potentially crowded and competitive races.
