George Conway Writes That Trump Has Invited Impeachment Proceedings To Begin

Lawyer George Conway, the husband of Trump aide Kellyanne Conway, wrote in a scathing op-ed that Donald Trump was begging to be impeached.

Conway, who is married to Trump’s White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, argued in a Washington Post op-ed Wednesday that the president has practically invited impeachment proceedings to begin. He, along with former Acting Solicitor General Neal Katyal, asserted that Trump had provided “direct evidence of his contempt toward the most foundational precept of our democracy ― that no person, not even the president, is above the law.”

The two lawyers pointed to a brief that the Trump administration filed on Monday seeking to block a subpoena of his financial records by the House Oversight Committee. In the document, Trump’s lawyers stated that a sitting president could not be investigated outside of impeachment proceedings. Conway argues that such a statement is effectively an invitation to Democrats to finally use the House’s powers of impeachment.

“It’s a spectacularly anti-constitutional brief, and anyone who harbors such attitudes toward our Constitution’s architecture is not fit for office,” wrote the pair. “Trump’s brief is nothing if not an invitation to commencing impeachment proceedings that, for reasons set out in the Mueller report, should have already commenced.”

The subpoena that Trump is attempting to appeal was held up by U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, allowing investigators access to up to eight years of financial records from Mazars USA. Conway and Katyal bring up one of the founding tenets of American democracy, the separation of powers. They state that Trump is doing his best to break down that separation by disregarding the judiciary and filling courts with his cronies. “England’s King George III was above the law, but the founders of our republic wanted a system that would divide power and have the branches check each other,” they wrote. “The idea that only the president can investigate the president is an argument for autocrats, not Americans.”

Many question Conway’s true commitment to impeachment, as his wife is one of the most fervent supporters of the president.
