Former White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders Eyeing 2022 Bid For Arkansas Governor

Sarah Huckabee Sanders is reportedly preparing to run for Arkansas governor in three years — a job her father, Mike Huckabee, held for a decade.

Sanders has remained in the limelight after her departure from the role of President Donald Trump‘s press secretary, by appearing on cable networks, offering speeches at Republican events and even signing a book deal.

Trump has backed the idea of her running for governor in 2022, because term limits will prevent Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson from being reelected. However, Sanders has approached the idea cautiously.

“I think there are two types of people that run for office: people that are called and people that just want to be somebody, that want a title,” Sanders told reporters. “I feel like in some ways, I’ve already hit a pretty good political title.”

She added, “If I do (run), it will because I feel called to do it and because I feel I can offer something to the state and I can do something to help move the state further ahead and grow it in a positive way and I fit what the state needs at that time.”

The gubernatorial election has already peaked the interest of several prominent Republicans including Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin who announced his bid in August. Two other potential candidates include Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, who frequently makes public service announcements on TV about vaping and other issues, as well as state Senate President and cousin of the current governor, Jim Hendren.

Sanders has refrained from speaking on certain sharply contested issues among Republicans, including Medicaid, which she would likely have to to take a stand on should she run for governor.

“It’s time to let the governor do his job and I don’t think it’s helpful for me to try to play a game from the side,” Sanders said. “That doesn’t help him. That doesn’t help the state.”
